My nephew is a soph at VT. Locked down in a classroom but otherwise safe.
I just read an article about a woman in Texas who killed herself and one of her two kids as a result of stress from being denied food stamps. And then I read an article where some idiot fuck of a baseball player was paid $250 MILLION dollars by some idiot fuck of a baseball team.
This is what we are doing to ourselves huh? Our world is going to shit isn't it?

Glad to hear your nephew is safe but one would hope that a college campus would be a relatively otherwise safe environment - particularly considering it wasn't so long ago that VT went through this same thing.
I sit on the Workforce Investment Board where I live, which is tasked with helping the least employable (vets (why?), elderly, disabled, parolees, etc) get job training and acess to jobs. You can imagine the fun stories I hear out here in California and particularly in the Salinas Valley where the bulk of our clientele is located. Lose a job? Lose health care, lose your home, lose hope...
... and if you have a job, know damn well the employer will squeeze every last bit out of you because you're damn lucky to have a job...

Meanwhile Jon Corzine gets to be a Senator, a state Governor, a CEO, lose ~$1.2 BILLION dollars of someone else's money.
And now he is Obama's Re-election Fundraising committee chair?
